It’s Carrie Little, and I’m excited to share a fun and creative morning I had with my twin sister, Dr. Mina Jo Blazy. On a recent Sunday morning, we decided to dive into two of my favorite tools, Canva and ChatGPT, to see just how far we could push the boundaries of AI-powered creativity. If you’ve ever been curious about how these tools can work together, this blog post is for you!
Exploring Canva’s AI Design Features
Mina kicked things off by experimenting with Canva’s “Redesign Anything” feature. She had recently created a thumbnail titled Why AI in Education and wanted to see if ChatGPT could redesign it. However, as we quickly found out, ChatGPT’s visual design capabilities are still a work in progress. While it could suggest ideas, Canva remained the star of the show with its polished AI-powered tools for image creation.
One of the standout moments was Mina’s discovery of Canva’s ability to generate custom images from simple prompts. We tested its capabilities with a storybook theme, asking it to create illustrations of identical twin girls for a children’s book concept. Canva’s AI responded with some impressive results that were vibrant, realistic, and creative. While ChatGPT tried its best, its results leaned more cartoony and less polished than Canva’s designs.
The Power of Playing Around with AI
I often say that the best way to learn is by playing. Mina and I had plenty of squirrel moments, veering off into new features and ideas as we explored the tools. Whether it was creating custom thumbnails or brainstorming book ideas, every experiment taught us something new.
For example, we discussed how educators could use AI to encourage creativity in the classroom. Imagine assigning a group of fifth graders the task of writing and illustrating a storybook using Canva and ChatGPT. The students could write a draft with ChatGPT’s help, then use Canva to create vibrant illustrations. It’s a great way to show how technology can support learning and creativity.
A Sneak Peek into MidJourney and Beyond
As we explored, we couldn’t help but mention MidJourney, another powerful AI tool for creating stunning visuals. While we didn’t dive into it during this session, it’s definitely on our list for future experiments. MidJourney’s ability to refine poses and generate ultra-realistic images could be a game-changer for projects like children’s books or marketing campaigns.
What We Learned
By the end of the session, it was clear that Canva has made significant updates to its AI tools, making it a must-have for creatives, educators, and business owners. ChatGPT, on the other hand, shines in generating ideas and content but has room to grow when it comes to visual design.
This playful morning reminded me of the importance of staying curious. Tools like Canva and ChatGPT are constantly evolving, and the only way to keep up is to dive in, explore, and have fun.
